Dr. Pettine was a co-founder of RMA Ortho in 1991. He has an extensive background in spinal surgery, research and rehabilitation. He is board certified and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Spine Arthroplasty Association, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He received his fellowship training at the Institute for Low Back Care in Minneapolis. Dr. Pettine completed his residency and his master's degree in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His medical degree was awarded from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has undergone additional training at Johns Hopkins to learn the technique of mini-incision hip replacement. Dr. Pettine's past appointments include: Staff Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief of the Sports Medicine Clinic at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Georgia; Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Georgia; and Visiting Consultant at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Dr. Pettine is the recipient of numerous honors, a distinguished speaker at national and international symposiums, and the author of nearly twenty research publications. He co-invented, designed and patented the Maverick™ Artificial Disc, a new technology for neck and back intervertebral disc replacement. The Maverick™ Artificial Disc is currently the subject of a clinical trial that is sanctioned by the FDA. Dr. Pettine is one of only 30 surgeons nationwide who is allowed to perform the operation as part of the clinical trial.
